Honorary and Memorial

The Ann M. Martin Learning for Life Scholarship, presented by the Henrico County Public School Librarians and the Henrico Education Foundation, is made possible by the HCPS librarians’ donation of funds as recipients of AASL’s 2011 National School Library Program of the Year. The scholarship provides financial support to Henrico County graduates planning to pursue further study or training beyond high school. The scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated a commitment to the promotion of libraries and literacy. Applicants must be enrolled in Henrico County Public Schools for at least 3 years, demonstrate a minimum GPA of 2.5, and submit evidence of a commitment to the promotion of libraries and literacy.

Mrs. Pat O’Bannon has devoted her life to focusing on local government and serving her community. This scholarship was created in honor of her retirement from the Board of Supervisors and is to encourage students to pursue careers in public service and follow in her footsteps. 

Mr. Frank J. Thornton is the first African American to serve on the Henrico Board of Supervisors. He laid an incredible foundation and set a legacy for future leaders in Henrico County. This scholarship, created in honor of his retirement, will be awarded to a Henrico County student of color who has displayed a commitment to leadership in and around their community just as Mr. Thornton has. 

The Carol L. Kenzer Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Carol L. Kenzer, who taught social studies for 24 years in North Carolina, Utah, and Virginia, including the last 10 years of her life at Moody Middle School in Henrico County. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who attended and completed the International Baccalaureate program at Moody Middle School.

The David A Kaechele Memorial Scholarship Fund is presented by the Henrico Education Foundation in memory of Henrico Supervisor David A Kaechele. The funds may be used for tuition, books or other school related costs and will be paid directly to the educational institution. Applicants must be enrolled in Henrico County Public Schools and have attended Kaechele Elementary School for at least one year, and possess a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The Dayne Michael Kaufman Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dayne Kaufman. The scholarship is created to encourage students to pursue educational opportunities after their senior year of high school. Applicants must be graduating seniors from Deep Run High School who are in good scholastic standing and who have an established history of extra-curricular or community service participation. The award is to be used for tuition, books or other school related costs and will be paid directly to the educational institution. Applicants must be planning to pursue a diploma from an accredited college or university, and possess a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.

The Gordon E. Burks, III scholarship was created to support a graduating senior at Henrico High School who plans to attend a four-year college/university to study science. Applicants must also have at least a 3.5 GPA and be a varsity athlete. The selection committee will review applications through a blind process facilitated by the Henrico Education Foundation. Funds will be deposited into the recipient’s 529 account or directly into the educational institution.

The Julia Budzinski Memorial Scholarship of two awards is presented by the Henrico Education Foundation and the Budzinski Family. Julia is remembered by friends and family for her positivity, humility, fierce competitiveness, hard work and the deep impact she had on those around her. She was a talented athlete, bright student and brought an energy that was uplifting. More than anything, she loved her faith, family, friends and community. The funds may be used for tuition, books, or other school-related costs and will be paid directly to the recipient’s educational institution or a 529 education account for the benefit and use of the award recipient. The selection committee will review applications through a blind process facilitated by the Henrico Education Foundation. Applicants must be enrolled in either Glen Allen High School or Mills Godwin High School at the time of application and possess a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The Lara Teague Curry Memorial Scholarship was established to support Douglas S. Freeman High School graduates to pursue further study or training at an accredited two year or four-year institution or trade school. Scholarship funds may be used by the recipient for tuition, books, or other school-related costs that the recipient chooses. The scholarship funds will be paid directly into a Virginia 529 education account for the benefit and use of the award recipient. Applicants must be enrolled in Douglas S. Freeman High School, have received instruction from Lara Teague Curry, and possess a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The Lucia Whalen Bremer Memorial Scholarship is presented by the Henrico Education Foundation and the Bremer Family. Lucia was a bright student, a dedicated athlete, a hard worker, and an optimistic young person who had the natural ability to make connections with those around her. Shortly after Lucia was killed, her community recognized the impact of her loss and responded by donating significant support to her family. It is with those funds that Lucia’s parents established this scholarship with the intention of helping other young people to achieve their educational goals and to ultimately make a positive contribution to their community. The funds may be used for tuition, books, or other school-related costs and will be paid directly to the recipient’s educational institution. The selection committee will review applications through a blinded process facilitated by the Henrico Education Foundation. Applicants must have attended Quioccasin Middle School for at least one year, be pursuing a Standard or an Advanced Studies diploma, and possess a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Nicholas was involved in entrepreneurial pursuits throughout the Richmond community. Through this scholarship the Troutman family and friends hope to inspire and encourage like-minded individuals to pursue their entrepreneurial goals just as their beloved son and friend Nicholas did. Applicants must be graduating seniors at Douglas S. Freeman High School with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

The Patricia Elaine Reynolds Scholarship was established to support Douglas S. Freeman High School high school graduates to pursue further study or training at an accredited two year or four year institution or trade school. Patricia was a Freeman Graduate herself and the first ever female recipient of the Athlete of the Year award. Scholarship funds may be used by the recipient for tuition, books, or other school-related costs that the recipient chooses. The scholarship funds will be paid directly into a Virginia 529 education account for the benefit and use of the award recipient. Applicants must be enrolled in Douglas S. Freeman High School at the time of application; a female senior Varsity athlete planning to pursue further study or training beyond high school; demonstrate financial need; and possess a minimum GPA of 2.75.

The Thomas Peyton Berry, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of TJ Berry and his service to the community and the Henrico County Police Department. The scholarship was created to encourage and enable motivated Henrico County Public Schools seniors to pursue opportunities in public service such as law enforcement, nursing, forensic science, fire science, ROTC, and emergency service professions. Applicants must be graduating seniors planning to attend a two-year community or four-year college/university, trade, vocational or technical school and possess a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75.
