At Fairfield Middle School, the Cornerstone Cultivators use the school’s Cornerstone Farm, a 2020-21 innovative grant, as the context to educate students, teachers, and the community about healthy food choices, accessible urban farms, and interesting careers in agriculture. The Cultivators learn from community experts who represent an array of careers and interests in agriculture and wellness. Through this process these students develop communication skills and grow in confidence as communicators, collaborators, and critical thinkers as they host podcasts and innovative workshops. This innovative grant project addresses student connection to their school community, chronic absenteeism, worsening health outcomes and a widening exposure gap to careers and experiences.
