Gretchen Sweat
Freeman Fund for the Arts
This fund was created to honor Gretchen Sweat who retired in 2024 from a 35-year career in education.
Gretchen B. Sweat was an educator in the Virginia Public Schools for more than 30 years. She was a teacher in the Henrico County Public Schools from 1997 and retired in 2024. She taught at Douglas Freeman High School in its Exceptional Education Department, and for a period of time, she taught in the Center for Leadership, Government and Global Economics. During her tenure, she volunteered and sponsored numerous clubs and activities, including National Honors Society and the theatre program. Prior to this, Mrs. Sweat was a teacher for four years in Poquoson, VA. She also taught in Snellville, GA and Miami, FL and served as a substitute teacher throughout her career as she raised her two children.
In her retirement, she plans to be actively involved in the multi-language learners (MLL) community providing these students with opportunities to excel in the classroom.
Mrs. Sweat was a big advocate for students being involved in extracurricular school activities outside of academics including drama, chorus and band. She recognized that not every student could afford to participate in these activities due to extra fees and costs. With this fund, she hopes more students will have access to be involved in these activities.
